(04/05/2015) Virus vs. Dragon Lee (CMLL)

Virus vs. Dragon Lee
CMLL
04/05/2015
CMLL World Lightweight

Year: 2015
Type: Title Match Style
Othern/a

Synopsis:

Virus’ long reign (almost four years!) as CMLL World Lightweight champion comes to an end against upstart Dragon Lee. The long title reign was a godsend for lucha libre fans as it gave us at least one or two (if not more) quality Virus title matches per year every year between 2011 and 2015. This match is far from the best of Virus’ reign. It is arguably not even the best Virus/Dragon Lee title match (that honor probably goes to their December 2014 title fight). Nonetheless, on the way out Virus provides yet another very good title match and adds further support to his case as the best luchador of the 21st century (so far).

04/03/1992
NWA World Middleweight

Year: 1992
Type:  Title Match Style
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

Originally this was match was to be Atlantis vs. Bestia Salvaje with Salvaje – who was being pushed heavily in 1992 with two hair wins already under his belt – ending Atlantis’ long title reign. Unfortunately, Salvaje blew out his knee after they set up this match for the Arena Mexico Anniversary show and Fiera was substituted in his place. Unlike Salvaje, Fiera was not being pushed hard at the time, resulting in a match where Altantis was clearly and consistently portrayed as being at least one level above his opponent. There is some action in this match while at the very least, the structure provides for an interesting and unique match.

(06/18/2009) Trauma II vs. Zatura (IWRG)

Trauma II vs. Zatura
IWRG
06/18/2009
Intercontinental Lightweight

Year: 2009
Type:  Title Match Style
Other: Recommended

Synopsis:

Great matches can can come from unusual places. Given some of the wrestlers IWRG booked in 2009, you would not exactly expect a young Trauma II and Zatura to produce the best IWRG title match of the year, but that’s almost certainly what this match is. The match has the feel – structure, pacing – of a quality lucha title match but pairs it with truly innovative and effective offense and sequences. The creative offense is executed very well and Zatura’s flying spots serve as a perfect complement to the hold-intensive portions of the match. This holds up as one of the more enjoyable and interesting matches of 2009 anywhere in the world.

Year: 1997
Type:  Title Match Style
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

A forgettable title match between a young (still masked) Shocker and veteran Emilio Charles. The match serves as an interesting look at the two luchadores in opposite stages of their career but the match itself is average or slightly above at best.

(07/03/1992) Negro Casas vs. El Dandy (CMLL)

Negro Casas vs. El Dandy
CMLL
CMLL World Middleweight
07/03/1992

Year: 1992
Type:  Title Match Style
Other: Classic

Synopsis:

The match has quite the history in terms of it was viewed and received by fans outside of Mexico. The match was praised at the time – Dave Scherer rated the match at **** and apparently Dave Scherer rarely rated lucha matches that highly back then – but in somewhat of a curiosity the match did not receive any votes in the DVDVR 90’s lucha poll. The video quality of the only known copy (possibly Scherer’s copy) was very grainy which likely played some role in the the match flying under the radar after the initial airing. As the story goes, the match was also not traded much from the initial airing up until the mid-2000’s when old lucha libre tapes were transferred to DVD. The match was praised by those that saw it then and again about five years later when it was included on the PWO 1992 Year Book. In recent years, a version of the match with higher video quality surfaced as well. Some combination of all those factors have led to Casas/Dandy being viewed as one of the classic lucha libre singles matches of all time.

This title match is a definite contender for the best lucha match of all time and is among my favorite matches ever. Like any matches that receive that level of acclaim, the work is both high level and varied. This is a match that fans of all styles of wrestling should seek out. The execution is near spotless and the match builds from exquisite opening mat work to a third fall finish filled with high end junior heavyweight style offense. Rarely do two wrestlers as great as Casas and Dandy have a match together that lives up to their individual abilities, but this one certainly does.
