(10/18/1996) Negro Casas vs. Bestia Salvaje (CMLL)

NEGRO CASAS VS. Bestia Salvaje
CMLL
HAIR VS. HAIR
10/18/1996

Year: 1996
Type: Hair vs. Hair
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

This hair match serves as a bridge in the Santo/Casas feud, cementing Casas’ tecnico status and setting the scene for Santo to return and side with the rudos (including Salvaje) in a few weeks. The match itself is rather basic and straightforward, with the a couple of quick rudo controlled falls to start things out. The hook to this match is how into Casas the fans are. He milks his comeback and the fans are with him every step of the way. It is clear watching this match (and the entire feud actually) that Casas being over as his adversary was the least of the issues with Santo’s rudo turn. The third fall is fun even if it is not outstanding. There is no blood and the drama level is somewhere in the middle relative to other hair matches, but the match is easy to watch and and Casas’ babyface performance is outstanding.

(10/15/2010) Negro Casas vs. Charly Manson (CMLL)

Negro Casas vs. CHarly Manson
CMLL
HAIR VS. HAIR
10/15/2010

Year: 2010
Type: Hair vs. Hair
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

A unique matchup during Charly Manson’s “blink and you’ll miss it” 2010 stint in CMLL. This seems like a weird match on paper (and it is) but it works out rather well. Manson and Casas wrestle a straight up, technically sound first fall that is a lot of fun if not a bit unexpected. There is a lot of rudo referring from Tirantes, but Tirantes is consistent with his approach and his act serves to stack the deck against Casas which was probably a necessity to get the fans to buy into Manson as a threat to Casas. It seems to payoff as the third fall is both well worked and relatively heated. Casas does not have bad hair matches (Super Parka match notwithstanding). This might be his most impressive & surprising effort.

(01/11/2015) Negro Casas vs. Maximo (CMLL)

Negro Casas vs. Maximo

Year: 2015
Type: n/a
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

One day after turning fifty-five years old, Negro Casas celebrated by tearing up one of Maximo’s knees and wrestling the first notable lucha libre match of 2015. This is a really fun match worked around a straight forward leg injury story. Casas revels in picking apart Maximo’s leg and for his part, Maximo is excellent at selling the injury. He is also excellent at overcoming the obstacle in an entertaining and satisfying way. As fair warning, if you believe limb injuries should a wrestler down for the entire match after they start selling it you won’t get that here. What you do get is infectiously fun limb work from Casas, sympathy-drawing selling from Maximo, and a really fun third fall comeback.

CMLL World Middleweight

Year: 1992
Type:  Title Match Style
Other: Classic

Synopsis:

The match has quite the history in terms of it was viewed and received by fans outside of Mexico. The match was praised at the time – Dave Scherer rated the match at **** and apparently Dave Scherer rarely rated lucha matches that highly back then – but in somewhat of a curiosity the match did not receive any votes in the DVDVR 90’s lucha poll. The video quality of the only known copy (possibly Scherer’s copy) was very grainy which likely played some role in the the match flying under the radar after the initial airing. As the story goes, the match was also not traded much from the initial airing up until the mid-2000’s when old lucha libre tapes were transferred to DVD. The match was praised by those that saw it then and again about five years later when it was included on the PWO 1992 Year Book. In recent years, a version of the match with higher video quality surfaced as well. Some combination of all those factors have led to Casas/Dandy being viewed as one of the classic lucha libre singles matches of all time.

This title match is a definite contender for the best lucha match of all time and is among my favorite matches ever. Like any matches that receive that level of acclaim, the work is both high level and varied. This is a match that fans of all styles of wrestling should seek out. The execution is near spotless and the match builds from exquisite opening mat work to a third fall finish filled with high end junior heavyweight style offense. Rarely do two wrestlers as great as Casas and Dandy have a match together that lives up to their individual abilities, but this one certainly does.

Leyenda de Plata Tournament FInal

Year: 2014
Type:  n/a
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

The calendar ran out on CMLL in 2013. A promotion that already runs roughly a gazillion tournaments each year decided it would like to cram one tournament int0 2013, so they started the Leyenda de Plata tournament on December 20th with the second qualifying cibernetico a week later which pushed the tournament final between Negro Casas and Titan into the 2014 calendar year. A spirited and crisp match built around no less than a half a dozen interesting spots/sequences. A great match to watch for those who doubt the greatness Negro Casas’ late career work. All of his offense and bumps are on point in this match, he moves better than a lot of wrestlers ten years his junior, and brings a ton of energy to the bout. The match also serves as a reminder of how polished and solid of an all-around wrestler that Titan can be when afforded an opportunity.
