(07/17/1992) El Satanico vs. Lizmark (CMLL)

El Satanico vs. Lizmark
CMLL
NWA World Light Heavyweight
07/17/1992

Year: 1992
Type:  Title Match Style
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

Satanico and Lizmark title matches are always worth watching and this one is no exception. Opinions seem to vary quite wildly from below average to excellent, with most falling in the “good/very good but not excellent” range. The first and third falls are full of the quality technical wrestler one would expect from these two great luchadores. The first fall is more grappling and counter hold based while the final fall is submission heavy. There are some referee screw ups and a flat finish that certainly do not help the match but also in no way ruin it. An entertaining match to watch on its own and an interesting one to watch in context of each wrestler’s full body of work.

(09/17/1993) Lizmark vs. El Satanico (AAA)

LIZMARK VS. El satanico
09/17/1993
MEXICAN NATIONAL LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT
AAA

Year: 1993
Type: Title Match Style
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

Another early AAA singles match is that is (a) wrestled in a rather traditional lucha style and (b) is very good. Satanico and Lizmark work a straight up title match in a style that would have looked very much at home in 1993 CMLL. The first fall is wrestled almost entirely on the mat. The mat wrestling is not world class and somewhat sedentary compared to high quality lucha mat work but it is never boring. Lizmark does show some of the quickness from his younger days a couple of times and there are enough interesting holds to keep your attention. The finish to the first fall is well executed and was a nice play off of the Lizmark/Parka title match from five months earlier. They pick up the pace for the second fall, which also has sort of a wonky ending although this one probably was not intentional. Even in the third fall, Satanico and Lizmark never stray too far from the mat. On their feet, they do a fine job as well job even though both guys are obviously far slower than they were in their primes. The build to and payoff of Lizmark’s top rope plancha was well done. This is not a classic title match by any means but it is another quality title match for Lizmark and possibly the last great singles match of his career. It is also Satanico working a straight up, technical title match which is always a fun look for him.

(06/18/1993) Lizmark vs. Jerry Estrada (AAA)

Lizmark vs. jerry estrada
06/18/1993
Mexican National Light Heavyweight
AAA

Year: 1993
Type: Title Match Style
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

Ohtani’s Jacket has alluded to the notion that Lizmark might be the greatest tecnico of all time but that it is impossible to say for sure when we only have a small portion of his career available. Lizmark’s 1993 alone makes a strong a case for that lofty claim. Opinions on Jerry Estrada run the gambit but he is clearly a limited worker at least offensively (his nutty bumps notwithstanding). Lizmark was ten years Estrada’s senior at the time of this match but you would not have guessed that how this was worked. It is an easy comparison but Lizmark exudes an Atlantis-like humble confidence. He also clearly gets more out of Jerry Estrada than maybe any other wrestler was able to in a singles match. Estrada’s performance is not superlative, but is clearly better than his average output. I think you have to credit that to Lizmark. The slow burn first fall is easily the weakest part of this match, but even then I liked the way they added a little spice with the unique stalemate spots. This is a match that builds really well, with each fall building off the other. It is a really smartly laid out match. Even the finish – which by modern eyes felt abrupt – got an excellent reaction from the live crowd. Even non-Estrada fans will enjoy this.

(04/30/1993) Lizmark vs. La Parka (AAA)

LIZMARK VS. La parka
AAA
mexican national light heavyweight
04/30/1993

Year: 1993
Type: Title Match Style
Other: Recommended

Synopsis:

The veteran Lizmark and the upstart La Parka wrestle the show stealing match at the inaugural TripleMania. 1993 AAA is a fascinating cross section of traditional lucha with the still-developing staples of AAA such as groundbreaking flying (good) and overbooked garbage matches (bad). This match is a perfect example of old meeting new and creating something truly excellent in the process.

The match is one fall, but builds from meaningful mat work to rope running to bigger bumps and near falls the way a CMLL title match from the same era might. The timing for this one was just right, as Lizmark was on the down slope of his career and La Parka was an emerging homegrown AAA star. They met at just the right times in their careers to produce a memorable match. Lizmark is smooth in every facet of his game. La Parka shows a technical proficiency that I sometimes forget he possessed and the deceptive agility that was his calling card for many years. They work snugly both on and off the mat. There are a lot of near falls here, but not an excessive amount both by future and contemporary standards. The match is hurt by the confusing false ending and re-start, but its not a deal breaker since the work that comes before it is so strong. Anyone that knows La Parka just from his WCW days or as a veteran should seek this out to see how awesome of a young wrestler he was. Lizmark delivers a must-see performance as well. He was quite possibly the best wrestler in Mexico in 1993 even as his career has already begun to wind down and this match is further proof of that.

Note on the newsletter recaps: Steve Sims version of the confusing finish would appear to be the correct one (as opposed to the Observer’s version) as it meshes better with what we can actually see happening in the video of the match.
