Mask vs. Mask

Year: 2015
Type: Mask vs. Mask
Other: High Flying

Synopsis:

The co-headliner of the 2015 edition of Homenaje a Dos Leyendas was a mask match built more around big flying spots and high impact moves than violence and sheer emotion. For that reason, the match did not exactly connect with fans of 80’s and early 90’s apuesta matches. Regardless, the match is an impressive and cohesive performance by two wrestlers who did their best to steal the show. The effort is an undeniable. Not everything is smooth – there are some moments where neither Lee or Kamaitachi know what to do next – but there are enough big spots to make it worth a watch for fans of high flying offense.

Other: Lucha Libre in Japan; High Flying

Synopsis:

The main event of the final night of the 2015 FantastiaMania tour was this high flying showcase match. Like many lucha in Japan matches, this one focuses on big time high spots more than anything else. Sombra and Dorada roll out impressive move after impressive move, which the Korakuen Hall crowd eats up. This match won’t be for everyone, but was the exact right match for its audience and circumstances. Dorada – who was announced pre-match has having signed a one-year contract with NJPW – is the star as he pulls off almost a dozen highlight reel moves.

Year: 2014
Type: n/a
Other: High Flying

Synopsis:

La Sombra and Dragon were frequent opponents during the first half of the 2010’s. This was their final singles match versus one another and some consider it their best. The third fall is where 95% of the action is (even more so then in the average match). The final fall is all about near falls. La Sombra and Dragon Rojo keep kicking out and keeping surviving until they work the Arena Coliseo crowd into a veritable frenzy. So much of the match’s value is tied into the late match offense and kick outs so how you feel about this match depends on how you feel about that stuff.

HAIR VS. HAIR

Year: 1994
Type:  Hair vs. Hair
Other RecommendedBloody; High Flying

Synopsis:

This match between very good (if not unheralded) luchadores Ciclon Ramirez and Javier Cruz is a quintessential “hair vs. hair” bout. It also features a must-see tope suicida from Ramirez, who made a career out of landing ridiculous physics-defying topes. All of the essential hair match elements are there from blood and brawling to insane dives and a big finish. The match has long had a strong reputation and finished 14th in the DVDVR 90’s lucha poll. It also holds up remarkably well. There are better available hair matches than this one (after all, it was not a heavily promoted match), but not many capture the spirit of a great hair match so thoroughly and effortlessly as this one did.

Synopsis:

The all-out spotlight high flying match as a long history on lucha libre promoted shows in Japan. Even so, few have been as direct in their approach as Volador Jr. and Mascara Dorada’s tour closing match of the 2014 FantasticaMania tour. By no means is this is a complete match, not is it supposed to be. It is spot after spot of high risk and often breathtaking high flying. If you understand what you are getting yourself into, I find it hard to believe you won’t come away from this match blown away by a spot or two (or ten).
