(08/13/1993) El Hijo del Santo vs. Heavy Metal (AAA)

EL HIJO DEL SANTO VS. HEAVY METAL
AAA
WWA Welterweight championship
08/13/1993

Year: 1993
Type:
Title Match Style
Other: High Flying

Synopsis:

The second of four televised title matches that Hijo del Santo and Heavy Metal wrestled in 1993. This one is spends less time on the mat than the first or third, which is not necessarily a negative. The extra mat wrestling of the first bout is replaced with additional flying, including several dives from Santo and a pair from Heavy Metal. Falls two and three are joined in progress, which makes it all the more confounding when an extraneous segment occurring outside of the match airs unedited. The match also features a wonky AAA-twist on a not uncommon lucha finish. The finish and the entire match have good heat. A good match overall, which features a pleasant mix of mat wrestling and high flying.

Year: 1993
Type:  Title Match Style
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

The first of a series of National Welterweight title matches between El Hijo del Santo and Heavy Metal. One of those matches where it is plain to see that one wrestler is in a completely different class than the other. Heavy Metal did not actively detract from the match for the most part but at best he was a warm body and several times his inexperience would have caused the match to grind to a halt, if not for Santo’s quick saves. The difference between the two is most evident on the mat where Santo is as smooth as ever while Heavy Metal struggles to both string multiple holds together and take advantage of the opening’s Santo leaves him. The match is a great look at Santo working with an inferior worker during his prime years. He manages an above average match to very good match with Heavy Metal providing very little in the way or actual value. It would have be neat if we had Heavy Metal versus Lizmark, Villano III, Eddie Guerrero, Octagon and others during this time to see how Santo’s ability to work with Metal stands up.

MEXICAN NATIONAL Welterweight
10/29/1993

Year: 1993
Type: Title Match Style
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

The third of the four championship matches El Hijo del Santo and Heavy Metal wrestled in 1993. This is the first and only match of the series where the Mexican National Heavyweight title is on the line rather than the WWA World Welterweight championship. Santo and Heavy Metal flirted with MOTYC-caliber matches on a couple of instances – this one included – but never quite had that breakthrough match. This is another strong performance from Santo and Heavy Metal got progressively sharper in the ring with each of the three matches, but there is still something missing from this one. For two wrestlers that were married to one another for three-quarters of the year, they never developed much chemistry. It is a very good match – maybe the best of the series, although many prefer the first match more. Regardless, the match clearly fails to reach that next level.

Mexican national welterweight
02/26/1993

Year: 1993
Type: n/a
Other: High Flying; Clipped

Synopsis:

Rey’s Mexican National Welterweight title was on the line in this bout between two of AAA’s most promising young starts. The match is heavily clipped up with only a couple of minutes of each fall shown at most so its hard to get a full grip on what kind of match they actually had. Rey is still wearing his long pants, singlet gear while Metal as always is sporting his classy one-third back t-shirt. The most notable spot is a near blow spot where Heavy Metal slips leaping onto the second turnbuckle. He climbs the turnbuckles and then freezes, seemingly waiting for Rey to follow up and cover. Rey eventually gets the message and kicks Metal to the floor, before they get back in the ring and go right to the planned fall finish. Rey looked good here but he’s still in that part of his career where he was a tad exposed in singles match. Heavy Metal never quite left that stage of his career. It makes you wonder if the match wasn’t messier than what was shown and that’s why it was all clipped up.

Synopsis:

The second (or fourth) Santo/Heavy Metal televised title match of 1993 is another good/great but not excellent/MOTYC match between the two. Once again Santo carries the action while Metal serves as a competent but not standout opponent. The most interesting aspect of this match might be confusion around when it took place. While historically listed as being taped on November 19th, there are reasons to believe that it was taped much earlier (May 28th) and is actually the second match in the four match television series rather than the fourth and final one.
