EL HIJO DEL SANTO VS. HEAVY METAL
AAA
WWA Welterweight championship
08/13/1993
Year: 1993
Type: Title Match Style
Other: High Flying
Synopsis:
The second of four televised title matches that Hijo del Santo and Heavy Metal wrestled in 1993. This one is spends less time on the mat than the first or third, which is not necessarily a negative. The extra mat wrestling of the first bout is replaced with additional flying, including several dives from Santo and a pair from Heavy Metal. Falls two and three are joined in progress, which makes it all the more confounding when an extraneous segment occurring outside of the match airs unedited. The match also features a wonky AAA-twist on a not uncommon lucha finish. The finish and the entire match have good heat. A good match overall, which features a pleasant mix of mat wrestling and high flying.

Wrestling Observer Newsletter Recap (August 30, 1993)
The highlight of the show was El Hijo del Santo regaining the WWA welterweight title from Heavy Metal with a camel clutch submission in the third fall. The third fall apparently ended with a double pin draw, which is the same finish they’ve done once or twice already when Santo went to regain the title. For reasons I can’t make clear, the commissioner at ringside told referee Pepe Casas (who is Heavy Metal’s father although they made it clear there was no favoritism since he was miked and continually scolded his son for breaking rules) to re-start the finish until there was a clean winner, so they re-started things. They also continually teased Metal losing the title via count outs where Metal would sprint to get back in the ring at the count of 19 1/2 (titles change in Mexico via COR and this match evidenced that rule can be used to create exciting false finishes) similar to Flair’s days with the 2 1/2 counts as champ. I gave it ***3/4 and it would have been higher except when they do their matwork, it doesn’t seem like they struggle enough getting each other into holds, which is admittedly just a prejudice against a differing style.
