(02/09/2014) El Dandy vs. El Satanico (Monterrey)

El Dandy vs. El Satanico
Monterrey
02/09/2014

Year: 2014
Type: Maestro
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

For his 2014 retirement tour (a retirement that he largely stuck to minus a few sporadic appearances), El Dandy wrestled his career-long adversary in different locations across Mexico. This was the Monterrey portion of the tour. It was also the mat work heavy match of the series (at least based on whats available in full or clip form online). Overall, this is a good maestro match but it is definitely enhanced by nostalgia. There is something special about watching two guys wrestle a good match almost a quarter of a century after they wrestled their most famous matches against one another.

Synopsis:

Satanico and Lizmark title matches are always worth watching and this one is no exception. Opinions seem to vary quite wildly from below average to excellent, with most falling in the “good/very good but not excellent” range. The first and third falls are full of the quality technical wrestler one would expect from these two great luchadores. The first fall is more grappling and counter hold based while the final fall is submission heavy. There are some referee screw ups and a flat finish that certainly do not help the match but also in no way ruin it. An entertaining match to watch on its own and an interesting one to watch in context of each wrestler’s full body of work.

El Satanico vs. Gran Cochise

NWA WORLD Middleweight
CMLL

Year: 1984
Type: Title Match Style
Other:Recommended

Synopsis:

Considered by the DVDVR Lucha 80’s set watchers to be among the best lucha matches of the 1980’s, this is a classically structured lucha title match in most every sense of the phrase. The first fall stays on the mat, which a heavy ephasize on struggle and stalemates. The entire match is wrestled on the up and up, maybe to a surprising extent given Satanico’s involvement. There is the second and third fall escalation one would expect from a quality title match, culminating in a submission heavy final few minutes. On an individual basis, this is another match that helps make the case of Satanico being an all-time great worker and a match that makes you wish we had access to more Gran Cochise singles matches.Considered by some to be a candidate for the distinction of “best lucha title match ever”.

Year: 1993
Type: Hair vs. Hair
Features: BloodyRecommended

Synopsis:

A model of a match if you are looking for no nonsense, cut-the-fat lucha style brawls. Morgan and Satanico were on the downsides of their careers at the time this match took place (which is a funny thing to write when both are still wrestling in 2016) but had more than enough left in the tank. Morgan and Satanico being hair match veterans also shined through in this match as it was classically styled and worked hair bout. This is a basic match – a lot of punching, relatively uncomplicated submissions, attacks of the knee, blood, and bumping – but it is all executed really well and with a high level of intensity. This feels more like a CMLL match than something from AAA for multiple reasons, almost all of which are positive. Fans of traditional hair matches, bloody lucha libre, and basic Memphis-like fights should seek this match out.

Year: 1993
Type: Title Match Style
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

Another early AAA singles match is that is (a) wrestled in a rather traditional lucha style and (b) is very good. Satanico and Lizmark work a straight up title match in a style that would have looked very much at home in 1993 CMLL. The first fall is wrestled almost entirely on the mat. The mat wrestling is not world class and somewhat sedentary compared to high quality lucha mat work but it is never boring. Lizmark does show some of the quickness from his younger days a couple of times and there are enough interesting holds to keep your attention. The finish to the first fall is well executed and was a nice play off of the Lizmark/Parka title match from five months earlier. They pick up the pace for the second fall, which also has sort of a wonky ending although this one probably was not intentional. Even in the third fall, Satanico and Lizmark never stray too far from the mat. On their feet, they do a fine job as well job even though both guys are obviously far slower than they were in their primes. The build to and payoff of Lizmark’s top rope plancha was well done. This is not a classic title match by any means but it is another quality title match for Lizmark and possibly the last great singles match of his career. It is also Satanico working a straight up, technical title match which is always a fun look for him.
