EL DANDY VS. LA FIERA
CMLL
11/27/1992
HAIR VS. HAIR

Year: 1992
Type:  Hair vs. Hair
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

A tantalizing match on paper that might not quite live up to expectations, but is still worth your time. El Dandy and La Fiera could work a worthwhile hair match in their sleep and they do better than that here. Just don’t go in expecting an amalgamation of both men’s best hair matches and you are sure to not be disappointed.

CMLL World Middleweight

Year: 1994
Type: Title Match Style
Other: Recommended

Synopsis:

This match is as tough, gritty, and realistic of a mat based match you will see outside of the high end Japanese shoot style matches. For anyone that mistakenly thinks lucha mat work (and lucha in general) is loose and unrealistic, this is the match to watch. The match is very dense with the appeal resting in the details – the up-close selling, the struggle for holds, and the struggle for escapes – which doesn’t necessarily make it an easy watch. If you are in the mood for a match steeped in struggle and realistic offense/selling, this is a great one to watch.

Year: 2014
Type: Maestro
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

For his 2014 retirement tour (a retirement that he largely stuck to minus a few sporadic appearances), El Dandy wrestled his career-long adversary in different locations across Mexico. This was the Monterrey portion of the tour. It was also the mat work heavy match of the series (at least based on whats available in full or clip form online). Overall, this is a good maestro match but it is definitely enhanced by nostalgia. There is something special about watching two guys wrestle a good match almost a quarter of a century after they wrestled their most famous matches against one another.

Year: 1992
Type:  Title Match Style
Other: Classic

Synopsis:

The match has quite the history in terms of it was viewed and received by fans outside of Mexico. The match was praised at the time – Dave Scherer rated the match at **** and apparently Dave Scherer rarely rated lucha matches that highly back then – but in somewhat of a curiosity the match did not receive any votes in the DVDVR 90’s lucha poll. The video quality of the only known copy (possibly Scherer’s copy) was very grainy which likely played some role in the the match flying under the radar after the initial airing. As the story goes, the match was also not traded much from the initial airing up until the mid-2000’s when old lucha libre tapes were transferred to DVD. The match was praised by those that saw it then and again about five years later when it was included on the PWO 1992 Year Book. In recent years, a version of the match with higher video quality surfaced as well. Some combination of all those factors have led to Casas/Dandy being viewed as one of the classic lucha libre singles matches of all time.

This title match is a definite contender for the best lucha match of all time and is among my favorite matches ever. Like any matches that receive that level of acclaim, the work is both high level and varied. This is a match that fans of all styles of wrestling should seek out. The execution is near spotless and the match builds from exquisite opening mat work to a third fall finish filled with high end junior heavyweight style offense. Rarely do two wrestlers as great as Casas and Dandy have a match together that lives up to their individual abilities, but this one certainly does.

HAIR VS. HAIR
10/29/1993

Year: 1993
Type: Hair vs. Hair
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

Out manned by AAA in 1993, CMLL seemed to have a knack for making big matches with their best workers count. This is the one full length Dandy singles match available from that year and he makes good on it. Dandy goes crazy here with the bumps, taking some nasty spills and shots in and out of the ring. Meanwhile, Charles shines on offense. This is a bloodless hair match but it hardly matters. The match is plenty violent without it. The consensus is that the 1993 hair match is not as good as their 1989 match (or series). It is still a quality hair match – another one for 1993 CMLL – and worth seeing if you enjoy the ’89 series.
