(05/03/2015) Titan vs. Cavernario (CMLL)

CMLL
05/03/2015
Mexican National welterweight

Year: 2015
Type: Title Match Style
OtherRecommended

Synopsis:

Cavernario failed in his first attempt to capture Titan’s Mexican National Welterweight title in July 2014. It was a title shot he earned by virtue of winning the 2014 En Busca de un Idolo tournament. That was a good match but both wrestlers upped their game for this re-match, which is among the best lucha matches of 2015. Titan and Cavernario put their own stamp on the usual title match format. The result is a match that plays to both wrestler’s strengths while not straying too far from what makes the lucha title match style such a time tested format.

Year: 2015
Type: n/a
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

Black Terry impressively carries along local boy Psycho Kid to a watchable match. Terry brutalizes Psycho Kid and himself, including getting busted open on some wicked head butts. If you want to see Terry carry along a clearly limited wrestler by beating him up and taking a beating himself. Psycho delivers one highlight of his own – a dangerous out of control tope – but is otherwise along for the ride. The match is not much, but is an example of how Terry can make something out of nothing as good as any wrestler going.

Year: 2015
Type: n/a
Other: n/a

Synopsis:

A unique match on paper pitting the veteran, technically proficient independent luchador Negro Navarro versus the young daredevil CMLL luchador Dragon Lee. They largely work Navarro’s match but Lee is game and adjusts just fine. A neat match to get to see another side of Dragon Lee if you are only familiar with his high impact matches alongside Kamaitachi.

(04/12/2015) Virus vs. Avisman (Chilanga Mask)

VIRUS VS. Avisman
Chilanga mask
04/12/2015

Year: 2015
Type: Maestro
Other: Recommended

Synopsis:

It is always a treat to when we get to see a maestro style match that does not involve the usual participants. Here it is IWRG mainstay Avisman that provides the welcomed diversity. Avisman is the clear underdog in this match. Positioning Avisman as the underdog helps this match avoid descending into a meaningless exchange of holds and mat wrestling. There is something at stake – Avisman’s big opportunity to show he can hang with someone of Virus’ caliber – that is palpable throughout the contest. One of the best mat-based matches of 2015.

CMLL World Lightweight

Year: 2015
Type: Title Match Style
Othern/a

Synopsis:

Virus’ long reign (almost four years!) as CMLL World Lightweight champion comes to an end against upstart Dragon Lee. The long title reign was a godsend for lucha libre fans as it gave us at least one or two (if not more) quality Virus title matches per year every year between 2011 and 2015. This match is far from the best of Virus’ reign. It is arguably not even the best Virus/Dragon Lee title match (that honor probably goes to their December 2014 title fight). Nonetheless, on the way out Virus provides yet another very good title match and adds further support to his case as the best luchador of the 21st century (so far).
