Volador Jr. vs. Mascara Dorada
CMLL
01/19/2014
NWA World Welterweight
Year: 2014
Type: n/a
Other: Lucha Libre in Japan; High Flying
Synopsis:
The all-out spotlight high flying match as a long history on lucha libre promoted shows in Japan. Even so, few have been as direct in their approach as Volador Jr. and Mascara Dorada’s tour closing match of the 2014 FantasticaMania tour. By no means is this is a complete match, not is it supposed to be. It is spot after spot of high risk and often breathtaking high flying. If you understand what you are getting yourself into, I find it hard to believe you won’t come away from this match blown away by a spot or two (or ten).

Volador Jr. pinned Mascara Dorada in 17:59 in a spectacle to retain the NWA Historic welterweight title. The finish was Volador Jr. coming off the ropes and jumping over Mascara Dorada into a Canadian Destroyer, followed by doing the same move, but to the side for the pin. Dorada opened doing a running flip dive over the top. Volador Jr. did a springboard huracanrana followed by his own running flip dive over the top. Volador Jr. did a tope. He went for a second one but Dorada moved and Volador Jr. took out Desperado at ringside. Dorada did a totally awesome tope. Volador Jr. did a springboard into the ring, but was hit by a Dorada dropkick. Dorada did a top rope Asai moonsault outside the ring. Volador Jr. did a top rope moonsault to the floor. Dorada did a huracanrana on the floor. He then jumped off the elevated risers (not that high) into a huracanrana on the floor, which was crazy. Dorada did a springboard into the ring but Volador Jr. caught him with a power bomb and gave him a second power bomb into the turnbuckles. Dorada did a Toyota roll for a near fall. Volador Jr. did a back stabber for a near fall. Dorada did a missile dropkick for a near fall. Volador Jr. did a legdrop off the top rope for a near fal. Dorada did a springboard outside the ring into a flip dive. He did a top rope Frankensteiner for a near fall. He went for a moonsault but Volador Jr. got his feet up. Volador Jr did a Spanish fly off the top rope for a near fall. Dorada then did a ropewalk into a huracanrana before Volador came back for the finish. This match had no extended selling and was almost all crazy moves. But the execution was flawless and this was the style the fans came to see. On the flip side, when you consider how crippled their predecessors have been doing one-tenth as much, they really could do more wrestling and selling and do less and the match would have been just as good (I don’t want to say better because this audience wasn’t there to see dramatic wrestling, they were there to see graceful high flying and this match was phenomenal at that), and they’d both have a lot more longevity before they destroy their bodies past the point of no return. ****1/4
