(04/18) Cavernario vs. Cachorro

CMLL
Arena Mexico (Mexico City, Mexico)
Judges:  Mr. Niebla, Volador Jr., Tirantes & Dragon Rojo

Cavernario bounced back after his disappointing match with Guerrero Negro Jr. and bounced back in a big way.

The young caveman was given most of the match to impress on offense and he made the most of the opportunity.  The match began with some back-and-forth which basically amounted to each guy being unable to even string two moves in a row together.  It registered with me in the sense that it felt like a stalemate and not just back-and-forth time killing.  That went on for a minute and a half or thereabout.  I liked the opening a lot.

From there, Canvenario controls most of the match on offense.  When he is not on offense, he is bumping big.  The Peste Negra junior associate pulls out a running on the apron, dive between the ropes tope as his first big move.  He takes a big flat back bump off the apron later in the match which is sort of an insane bump to take in a lightning match.  He eats a Cachorro tope nicely and later counters a second tope by side stepping and pushing Cachorro past him into the barricade.  He also added his top rope splash to the floor, which – as insane as it sounds – appears as if it is becoming a regular part of his arsenal.  It looks great but diving on his knees at that distance can’t be good for his long-term well-being.

Cachorro was very smooth here and kept with Caveranrio well.  I thought this was his best showing of the tournament thus far.

The match ends rather abruptly passed the nine-minute mark.  Cachorro catches Cavernario sleeping and applies an arm bar for the quick tap.  Presumably, the idea was to get Cachorro (1-1) a win to set up future tournament booking while making sure that Cavernario would receive plenty of judge and fan voting points.

This was a very good match and maybe my favorite of the tournament to this point.  Cachorro scored well with Tirantes (of course) being the only judge was less than impressed.  Canvernario manages to win over the entire panel – Tirantes included – and receives a perfect score.  According to thecubsfan, it was the third perfect score in tournament history joining Euforia (2012 runner up) and Vangelis (2013 winner).

Judges’ Scores:  Cachorro– 31; Cavernario – 40

(04/18) Dragon Lee vs. Guerrero Negro

CMLL
Arena Mexico (Mexico City, Mexico)
Judges:  Mr. Niebla, Volador Jr., Tirantes & Dragon Rojo

Volador is your guess judge while Dragon Rojo subs for the once again for the absent Shocker.  Volador is rocking a funky looking hat and jacket combination.  I feel like he is getting more comfortable being without the mask and I would be sort of surprised if he doesn’t regain some of the steam he lost after his mask-loss and technico turn sometime in the near future.

Dragon Lee (1-1) continues his somewhat surprising tournament (in terms of quality matches) with another fine performance.  He pulls off nice arm drags early on, hits a bullet of a tope, and bumps hard off of the apron for his opponent.  Guerrero Negro (1-1) is less impressive here (and in general).  His double stomp outside of the ring does not look good.  He moves very tentatively in the ring.  Deliberate movement in wrestling is perfectly fine (usually even a positive attribute) but his movements come off more unintentionally slow than deliberate.

Negro kicks out of a spider suplex but a pair of German suplexes are enough to keep him down for good and give Dragon Lee his second win of the tournament.  I was not too high on either coming into the tournament.  Thus far, Guerrero Negro has justified my prior opinion of him while Dragon Lee is changing my mind.

Judges’ Scores:  Guerrero Negro Jr. – 26; Dragon Lee – 31

(04/15) Cachorro vs. Soberano Jr.

CMLL
Arena Mexico (Mexico City, Mexico)
Judges:  Mr. Niebla, Felino, Tirantes & Dragon Rojo

Dave Meltzer has taken a liking to Cachorro based on what he has seen from him during this tournament.  He has gone as far as to label him a young Negro Casas which – it goes without mentioning – is very high praise.  Cachorro does off like a natural in the ring.  His movements and timing are spot on and more akin to that of a veteran luchadore than the youngster that he is.

Case in point, during the opening mat work Cachorro scrambles back to his feet with after breaking contact with Soberano.  He is not just going through the motions.  He doesn’t want to be caught off guard standing up and conveys as such with just the right blend of drama and subtlety.  A few seconds later, he pulls of a basic but slick reversal out of a head scissors arm bar.  It was a minor move but it wa so well executed and presented that it stuck out.  Wrestling fans and other wrestlers are fond of talking about the “little things” that separates the greats from the also-rans.  Cachorro would seem to have a strong grasp of the little things at an early stage of his career.

This is a shot match – less than six minutes in total – which Soberano wins with a submission.  The victory evens both luchadores’ records at 1-1.  The judges also find the wrestlers to be relatively equal, awarding Soberano 30 points to Cachorro’s 29.

Judges’ Scores:  Soberano Jr. – 30; Cachorro – 29

(04/15) Dragon Lee vs. Star Jr.

CMLL
Arena Mexico (Mexico City, Mexico)
Judges:  Mr. Niebla, Felino, Tirantes & Dragon Rojo

With both wrestlers wearing long red boots, red trunks, and red masks, it takes a second to orient who is who (the masks and Star Jr.’s curly ponytail help).  Speaking of appearances, Virus has shown up in the corner of his team san-face paint prior to this match.  Since he wrestled on this show, he has the face paint, tucked-in polo shirt look going and it doesn’t work.  He made the right decision leaving the face paint off (when he can) while coaching.

This was a very good match and up there with Canvernario vs. Hechicero as the best 2014 En Busca de un Idolo has had to offer thus far.

These two worked really snug and smoothly together.  Dragon Lee pulled out some stiff drop kicks akin to his older brother and Star Jr. returned the favor on occasion.  Star took a huge tumbling bump to the outside in the early going which Lee capitalized on with a tope con hilo.  Lee shows further disregard for his body in landing right on his neck in falling off of the turnbuckle and bumping to the outside on a drop kick some time after that.

The match was quick and even throughout.  Dragon Lee gets to the top rope late in the match but Star Jr.  cuts him off with a top rope arm drag.  He quickly applies a submission and Dragon Lee gives it up almost immediately.

Dragon Lee has received some flak diehard lucha-watchers early on his career but he has been more than competent in his first two tournament matches.  He is not in the same tier as the upper guys in this tournament but he shows more promise than his one brother (Mistico II) and has flashed some signs of resemblance to his other brother (Rush), both of which are good signs.

I’d put this just a smidge behind Hechicero/Cavernario in terms of quality.  The judges reward both technicos for their effort with fine scores.

Judges’ Scores:  Star Jr. – 35; Dragon Lee – 30

(04/11) Hechicero vs. Guerrero Negro Jr.

CMLL
Arena Mexico (Mexico City, Mexico)
Judges:  Mr. Niebla, Shocker, Tirantes & Dragon Rojo

A case could be made that the two best wrestlers in the tournament drew the two worst wrestlers in the tournament in Week #2 (after the best and worst squared off during the first week).  Hechicero (1-0) – much like Canvernario – takes a step down after his strong first week.  He is not bad here and I put much of the onus on Guerrero Negro (0-1) but he just isn’t as good as he was when in the ring with a talented wrestler like Cavernario.

They struggle early on transitioning out of an Abdominal Stretch.  At the end of the match, they seemingly blow the finish when Guerrero Negro falls over while attempting to apply an abdominal stretch/octopus hold on Hechicero.  They tumble to the mat and Negro Jr. gets an immediate deer caught in the headlights look.  To be fair, Hechicero is not quick to react either as he lays on the mat for several seconds before getting up, taking control, and leading them to the improved finish for the Negro Jr. win.

In between, there were some bright spots.  Hechicero was very smooth in the opening mat work.  He is a strong offensive wrestlers who innovates without overthinking, which was displayed here by a nice rolling uppercut.  Hechicero also added a monkey flip that Negro Jr. took a big bump on to the outside, before Hechicero flattens him with his neat inside-outside second rope springboard moonsault.

Nice moves aside, this was not much of a match I thought.  I thought Hechicero was clearly the better guy but the judges didn’t agree.  Either that or they held Hechicero to a higher standard.

Judges’ Scores:  Hechicero – 20; Guerrero Negro Jr. – 23
